Wiens F5 #26, signed Sept. 28 2009 is a very important instrument in my history as a mandolin maker. It was built in 2008-09 and intended as a full expression of the Fern F5 that Loar envisioned.

It features an abalone Fern inlay, Triple binding, Adirondack Spruce top with tone-bar bracing and a Virzi (or Wienzi). A very elegant One-piece slabbed Sugar maple back. It has Silver-plated hardware throughout, including the James tailpiece and Waverly tuners with mother of pearl knobs. A Mother of Pearl nut tops the flat ebony fingerboard which has full size MOP lozenges and 29 Stainless steel frets with unmodified fingerboard extension. In 2009 this was the most ornate mandolin I’d built, and perhaps still is.

This instrument has been in the hands of a very busy musician/teacher and has opened up beautifully since it left my shop 15 years ago. The exceptional condition is a tribute to the present owner.
